Screen Savers Got No Reason...

iX Screen Saver PaX (Version 3.1.3)
for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

OK, let's face it. The days are long since gone when anybody really needed screen savers to save their computer screen from the dreaded "burn in" or "ghost image". Macintosh systems shut the monitor off to save energy and improve screen life, and use other techniques to prevent "burn in" on CRT systems. But screen savers are loads of fun, and if one pops up on your screen in an idle moment, or when the phone rings and you take your hands off the keyboard, they can be a pleasant distraction.

And it turns out that they are kinda fun to make, too. Every so often one of our developers needs a distraction, so they make a screen saver, and when it's done, we drop it into the pack.

Got Options?

Our pack of Screen Effects for Mac OS X includes original screen savers and our version of some classic savers, and even a couple that are down right "retro". Each screen saver has some sort of tunable options, because they are fun. iX Screen Savers are written in Objective C, using Cocoa and Quartz. A few saver, including Xirtam and BabelBloX, use OpenGL.

Feedback

Each saver also includes an active email link in Configure panel for email feedback. If you experience any issues, be sure to let us know the type of computer you are using. These savers work on every Macintosh that we have, but we don't have one of everything!

We welcome ideas for new savers, too.

We hope you enjoy these savers as much as we've enjoyed making them.

Known Issues:

  • Xirtam (the MatriX-like saver) and a couple others don't work on High Sierra. We're looking into this and will fix it.
  • iX Deco may not be suitable for persons prone to epilepsy. Do not use this screen saver if you are subject to seizures.
  • iX RoX Screen Saver animation isn't smooth at all. We should convert it to use Core Animation, rather than optimizing the extant animation routines.
  • Several screen savers are totally retro, to the point of inducing laughter. This is intentional.
  • We have seen the System Preferences application on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) freeze, when browsing through various screen savers, looking at options panels, and whatnot. When this happens, the only thing you can do is Force Quit the System Preferences application. This appears to be due to bugs in the new Screen Saver engine, so please be sure to send your crash reports to Apple, if this happens to you. We haven't seen this happen on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard).
Enjoy!
